Quick answer

How does SEO work for electricians?

SEO for electricians means getting your business into the Google map pack and the results under it when someone nearby searches for an electrician. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, so the work is a complete Google Business Profile, a page for each service, steady reviews and a fast website that shows your licence.

Key takeaways

  • Google handles 87.9% of Australian searches (StatCounter, September 2026), so the map pack is where most local electrical work is won or lost.
  • Google says local results are based on relevance, distance and prominence, and you cannot pay for a better local ranking.
  • Give each service its own page: fault finding, switchboard upgrades, EV chargers, solar and batteries, smoke alarms and commercial work.
  • Show your licence number and real job photos, because customers check you before they let you into the house.
  • SEO takes months, so make sure every call is answered, or the leads it brings are wasted.

Why does SEO matter for electricians?

When the power is out or a breaker keeps tripping, people grab their phone and search. Google handles 87.9% of searches in Australia (StatCounter, September 2026), and for local searches it shows a map with three businesses at the top, then the website results underneath.

An urgent fault call is usually decided in minutes, by whoever shows up first, looks legitimate and answers. Planned work like a switchboard upgrade or an EV charger is researched over days, and the customer reads your pages, checks reviews and compares quotes. Good SEO for electricians serves both kinds of customer.

Most sparkies are still not doing it. In ServiceTitan's 2025 survey of 1,025 Australian trade businesses, 76% said they market through their website but only 17% said they use SEO. That gap is the opportunity.

What do people search for when they need an electrician?

Electrical searches fall into four groups, and each one is won a different way.

Electrical searches and what wins the click
Type of searchExamplesWhat wins it
Urgent faultelectrician near me, power outage electrician, emergency electrician plus your suburbA top three map position, accurate hours and a phone number you can tap
Planned upgradeswitchboard upgrade cost, EV charger installation, ceiling fan installationA dedicated service page with price guidance, real photos and answers to common questions
Safety and compliancesmoke alarm compliance, safety switch installation, electrical safety checkA plain English explanation of the rules in your state, your licence shown and a quick booking path
Commercialcommercial electrician, test and tag, office fit out electricianA separate commercial page with insurance, inductions and examples of commercial jobs

How do electricians rank in the Google map pack?

Google says local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches the search, distance is how far you are from the searcher, and prominence is how well known and trusted your business is, which includes reviews and what the web says about you.

You cannot change where a customer is standing, so the work goes into relevance and prominence. Start with your Google Business Profile:

  • Primary category set to Electrician, with secondary categories only for work you really do
  • Your service area set to the suburbs you genuinely cover, with your home address hidden if customers do not visit you
  • Every service listed, with a short description in your own words
  • Hours that tell the truth, so do not claim 24 hours unless someone actually answers at 2am
  • Real job photos added regularly: switchboards, installs, your van and your team
  • Your business name exactly as it is registered, with no suburbs or keywords added

What should an electrician's website include for SEO?

Your website backs up your profile. Google uses it to understand what you do and where, and customers use it to decide whether to call.

  • One page for each service you want more of, with a title that matches what people type, such as Switchboard Upgrades in your city
  • Pages for areas you genuinely service, each with real jobs from that area, not the same page with the suburb name swapped
  • Your electrical licence number on every page, ideally in the footer, plus a link to your state's licence check
  • A tap to call button that stays visible on a phone
  • Photos of your own work, with a sentence on what the job was
  • A short quote form that reaches you, tested every month
  • Fast loading on a phone, because most of these searches happen on one

How do reviews help an electrician rank?

Reviews feed prominence, and they are the thing customers look at before they call. A steady trickle of recent reviews beats a burst of twenty from three years ago.

Ask every customer, at the moment the job is done and they are happy, with a direct link to your review form. Do not offer discounts or prizes for reviews and do not only ask the customers you think will be happy, because Google's rules ban both. The guide to Google review rules in Australia covers what is allowed.

Reply to every review, good or bad. A calm, factual reply to a one star review often does more for the next customer than ten five star reviews.

What should an electrician fix first?

SEO for electricians takes months, not weeks, and the map pack in a big city is harder than in a regional town. My SEO and Google Maps work starts from $800 a month, and I take one business per trade per area, so I am never ranking you against another client. If you would rather do it yourself, the steps above are the right order.

  1. 1Search your main service and suburb on your phone and note the three businesses in the map. That is your real competition.
  2. 2Fix your Google Business Profile category, services, hours and service area today.
  3. 3Add ten real job photos and set a reminder to add more every week.
  4. 4Send your last twenty happy customers a review link this week.
  5. 5Write or rewrite one service page for the job you most want more of.
  6. 6Check that your website shows your licence and that your quote form actually arrives.

Frequently asked questions

What Google Business Profile category should an electrician use?

Use Electrician as your primary category if general electrical work is the core of your business. Add secondary categories only for services you actually provide and that appear in Google's category list, such as solar or electrical installation work.

Should electricians create a page for every suburb?

Only for areas you genuinely service and can say something real about, such as jobs you have done there. Dozens of copies of one page with the suburb name swapped can do more harm than good.

How many reviews does an electrician need to rank?

There is no set number. Look at the three electricians in the map for your main search and aim to beat their recent review count over the next few months, rather than chasing a total.

Is SEO or Google Ads better for electricians?

Google Ads can bring calls tomorrow but you pay for every click. SEO takes months but keeps working without a cost per click. Many electricians use ads while SEO builds. The Google Ads guide for tradies explains the costs.

How long does SEO take for an electrical business?

Profile fixes can show movement in weeks. Website rankings usually take several months, longer in a competitive city. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is guessing.
